Questions

Hey FTC Nation - believe it or not we're about to start brainstorming game design ideas for the 2012/2013 season!

I love this part of the process - blank sheet of paper, a huge variety of ideas, and working with some really cool (and talented) people.

We may share some hints about this year's game too - with a creative bunch like this the ideas will be flying...

If you have any crazy ideas - send them in, maybe we'll use some for the new game.

I've really enjoyed the end game option in HotShot with an off field goal. It got us out of the box somewhat...need to have realistic autonomous options so that doing some simple motion scores points with bigger bonueses for sensor use during this section of the game.
find an interesting option for robot-robot interaction to score bonus points...

I think it would be really cool to do something similar to the mini-bots in FRC, except useing LEGOs.

And another thing: Get under it?

I agree with Andrew - I loved the end game option in HotShot - very exciting & fun to watch. I'll have my FTC teams do more brainstorming.

An underwater or flying challenge!!!

:D

I think a game using an alternative surface, such as teflon with teflon wheels (à la Lunacy) would be very interesting, just don't make the rules as complicated as Lunacy, though :)

Does anyone think that the penguin is a hint to what this years game is going to be. I am thinking its going to have either slick surface or a feather like element to it

Great comments - I can tell you some of these were discussed during this weekend's GDC meetings too.

Just an FYI for those of you who didn't compete in the March 2009 or March 2010 Alamo FTC Championship but our venue was basketball/Ice Hockey arena. We are ready to go back to that venue in future seasons if we need an game surface of ICE!

Hockey?! "Ice, Penguin" i doubt the flying game the reason being that the Penguin is a "Flightless Bird"

The key part is that it's not driver versus driver, it's robot versus robot.
Defense was a little heavily favored in Get Over It. A setup more like Hot Shot would make teams build better robots.

I think that the autonomous period needs to be longer. I have a parent in the robotics feild and autonomy is all the rage. Also I think this would make things near impossible, but what if we needed to make 2 robots?

I find that games that offer multiple options for scoring are more fun to compete in and watch.

End game specific tasks (off field goal, balancing, etc.) are great in many ways, but the points need to be balanced. If it's worth too much robots will park early to be in a good position for end game, and that can be boring for spectators.

Games that you can easily calculate the score at any time by just looking at the field are also really great for the spectators. (and it helps at the big events where otherwise teams stick around the field waiting to see the score)

Finally, long auto-modes are great...but a lot of teams lack programming support. So having easy scoring options in auto (like just be on the other side of the field) is a paramount. It's always great to see robots in action in auto rather than just waiting for tele.

penguil probably means a slippery surface like in the face off game they had the pvc pipes on rollers so it made it slippery, i think it will be a mix of everything from the past seasons

What about Hanging? Hanging would be awesome in FTC, do it like Breakaway where the teams get multiple options to hang. And it would be a great way to push the Pitsco to its limits, and a great learning experience for the students.

I wouldn't be suprised if the surface of the playing field is slippery and we can only use omni wheels. idk. This also may suggest that the main scoring element is pucks (penguins hockey) make the connection.
